We Screamed Together!

Behind the Curtain: A New Intimate Series at The Capitol Theater AUGUST 22ND 8PM

Join us on stage — literally — for the first performance in our new Behind the Curtainseries, where audiences and artists share the same space in a one-of-a-kind theatrical setting. With only a limited number of seats available directly on stage, this is an immersive experience that breaks the fourth wall and invites you into the heart of the performance.

In partnership with the Art Center of Burlington, The Capitol Theater is proud to present: Leisha Nicole Stanek – What We’re Doing In Iowa Instead of Church 💥

Critically acclaimed writer and performance poet Leisha Nicole Stanek brings her searing, unapologetic, and deeply human one-woman show to The Capitol Theater for one night only.

Through fierce lyrical storytelling, raw vulnerability, and eight striking costume changes, Stanek dives headfirst into the personal and political with What We’re Doing In Iowa Instead of Church — a 70-minute spoken-word slam that explores multigenerational sexism, Christian nationalism, and bodily autonomy. Set against the backdrop of rural Catholic upbringing and late-stage capitalism, Stanek’s performance is a high-voltage ritual of transformation, grief, rebellion, and hope.

⚠️ Please note: Due to adult themes and nudity, attendees must be 18+ or accompanied by a legal guardian.

The show begins with a moment of collective presence: cell phones turned off and sealed away, followed by a quiet life-drawing meditation — setting the stage for an unforgettable, soul-piercing journey that attendees have called “life-changing” and “a sermon for survival.”

Plus, a portion of ticket sales will be donated to a local organization working on providing access to reproductive healthcare and support in our region.

🎟️ Tickets are extremely limited due to the on-stage seating arrangement. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness an unforgettable performance from mere feet away.
